This essay analyses the complex path of Sweden’s approach to the European Union. It examines the constitutional revision of 1994, which introduced a new procedure for ratifying European treaties and restrictions on the merits which can be traced back to the doctrine of counter-limits. Finally, it presents the complex of parliamentary instruments for directing and controlling the government’s activity in European bodies.
