In recent years, thanks to the Internet and social media, conspiracy theories have entered public debate and popular culture, leaving the marginal position they long occupied (Reyes, Smith, 2012, pp. 399-415). They have become a phenomenon that in some cases has taken on the features of a new terrorism (ReacT, 2021) and, as Věra Jourová states, «can undermine the health of our democracies» (CE, Unesco, 2020). In this framework, the paper aims to open a space for reflection in the field of communication design by following some criteria for interpreting the way conspiracy theories strategically use images: from semiotic mystifications and falsifications to increase disinformation, to cases where the iconography of hate and cinematic fiction become identity signs of movements that transform conspiracy theories into political ideologies.

Abstract
In recent years, thanks to the Internet and social media, conspiracy theories have entered public debate and popular culture, leaving the marginal position they long occupied (Reyes, Smith, 2012, pp. 399-415). They have become a phenomenon that in some cases has taken on the features of a new terrorism (ReacT, 2021) and, as Věra Jourová states, «can undermine the health of our democracies» (CE, Unesco, 2020). In this framework, the paper aims to open a space for reflection in the field of communication design by following some criteria for interpreting the way conspiracy theories strategically use images: from semiotic mystifications and falsifications to increase disinformation, to cases where the iconography of hate and cinematic fiction become identity signs of movements that transform conspiracy theories into political ideologies.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
