Through a comparison with Gillian Crampton Smith and Alessandro Masserdotti, this contribution offers a reflection on the present and future of Interaction Design. Based on curiosity and research interests connected to the teaching activity in the master's degree course in “Design for digital innovation” (University of Camerino), a dialogue was opened with these two figures who, in different times and ways, have contributed to the development of this discipline in Italy. Their answers, in turn, open up a series of questions about the fate of the designer rofession, in a landscape increasingly dominated by technologies and digital devices. Within the complex map drawn by the professional practices of contemporary designers, interaction Design (IxD) has a crucial position. This term, coined by Bill Moggridge and Bill Verplank in the mid-eighties of the last century (Moggridge, 2007), maintains a strong relevance today. However, it coexists more and more often with other names such as User Experience (UX) or User Interface (UI) design. The evolution of digital technologies constantly reconfigures its disciplinary perimeter. The design of the interaction, precisely under this fluid and unstable condition, constitutes fertile ground for investigating the question raised by this issue of “DIID”.
Attraverso un confronto con Gillian Crampton Smith e Alessandro Masserdotti, questo contributo propone una riflessione sul presente e sul futuro dell’Interaction Design. Sulla base di curiosità e interessi di ricerca collegati alla attività didattica nel corso di laurea magistrale in “Design per l’innovazione digitale” (Università di Camerino) è stato aperto un dialogato con queste due figure che, in tempi e modi diversi, hanno contribuito fortemente allo sviluppo di tale disciplina in Italia. Le loro risposte aprono a loro volta una serie di interrogativi sul destino cui va incontro la professione del designer, in un panorama sempre più dominato dalle tecnologie e dai dispositivi digitali. Nell’intricata mappa disegnata dalle pratiche professionali dei designer contemporanei, l’Interaction Design (IxD) occupa una posizione cruciale. Tale termine, coniato da Bill Moggridge e Bill Verplank verso la metà degli anni ottanta del secolo scorso (Moggridge, 2007), mantiene oggi una forte pertinenza, sebbene conviva sempre più spesso con altre denominazioni come User Experience (UX) o User Interface (UI) design. L’evoluzione delle tecnologie digitali ne riconfigura costantemente il perimetro disciplinare, ma il design dell’interazione, proprio in virtù di questa sua condizione fluida e instabile, costituisce un terreno fertile per indagare le questioni poste sul tappeto da questo numero di “DIID”.
