Recent research has interested a number of issues involving non-structural elements as found in constructions in seismic areas, e.g. modelling of the seismic behaviour of claddings and infill walls and their interaction with the structure, adoption of non-structural elements to contribute to the structural seismic resistance, analysis and control of the seismic response of furniture to avoid damage and fatalities. The state of the art appears diversified and this special session aims at providing an overview of current research being developed for non-structural elements within earthquake engineering. Specific attention of the session is given to industrial researches, focused on the description of the response of non-structural elements, oriented towards more accurate predictions of the seismic behaviour of constructions under seismic input, as well as towards the development of innovative solutions promising improved performance and higher safety levels in seismic areas.
