The review of the products available on IRIS and published in foreign media during the reference period for this study, along with consequent reflections, have not only drawn an overall picture of the European and international periodicals identified in the review, but they have also resulted in more detailed interpretation. The national and European production of scientific works in the field of the history of architecture and of the city, of the territory and of the landscape, has brought to the fore, in recent years, two basic tendencies: on the one hand, a prevalent interest in the phenomena, protagonists and cultural movements of the last two centuries; on the other, almost as if to compensate for the limitation over time of historical reconstructions and criticism, a very wide variety of interests and themes. This perspective reiterates the age-old question that asks what, in Italy and especially in today’s Europe, is the purpose of historical architectural research and, above all, who are the main recipients of the contents and results of its activity. The answer to these questions should be able to provide those fundamental elements of judgment in order to understand, not only how scientific research is being structured in the historical field - and, more specifically, in the history of architecture -, but also which path European scientific policy has taken in this area.
