This paper focuses on the experience of an Italian company, Guzzini, a historical and authoritative example of Italian design, which linked its history and image particularly to the use of a material, PMMA. The aim of this research is unveiling an unprecedented history materic that saw the substitution of a natural material, such as horn with synthetic using it as a “surrogate” in substitution of a natural material, such as horn in terms of both technical and expressive-functional qualities, both fundamental for the project. With reference to the evolution of productive system, the idea was highlighting how this company was able to enhancfe properties and quality, which were subseuqntly recognised as distinctive of the synthetic material.
