THE SOUTH AS PARADIGM Di Luca Galofaro The current state of crisis of the hegemonic model of development demands a deep rethinking and a radical shift towards a different idea of modernity. The South -as geo-philosophical, cultural, political and economical dimension- represents a possibility to construct a different idea of modernity, autonomous from the infinite run-after profit and private appropriation: a modernity of the Common, based on a different conception of time, resources and relationships. From that perspective the South can be seen rather than as a necessary victim of the North-West exploitation or as a chronically back-warded and pathologically imperfect territory to be developed according to the dominant paradigm, as a critical point of view on modernity.
