Resistin is a proteic hormone recently identified as an adipokine. It is strictly related to the control of appetite and metabolism but it is also implicated in other functions including the control of reproductive activity. In this study we analysed by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry its expression and localization in the uterus of sheep, evaluating, in addition to its presence and localization, also a possible variable expression as a result of a diet with different chemical composition. In particular we used 50 “Comisana” sheep fed on Apennine semi-natural pasture for two experimental periods: in the first period the animals were fed on pasture at the height of its flowering (first group or group A); in the second period the animals were fed on the same pasture until it was completely dry while they were equally allocated into two groups (B and C). The group B received a diet supplement of cereals daily. Resistin transcript was evidenced in uterus samples of all the groups examined. The immunohistochemical study showed a positive immunoreaction on uterine sections with an involvement of the epithelial, glandular and muscular cells. The immunopositive reactions did not evidence any difference among the different experimental groups. These results allowed us to assume that resistin is present in the uterus of the sheep with a peculiar cytoplasmatic localization and that its expression does not seem to be influenced by the different chemical composition of the diets.
