Summary: Cancer is global public health problem conquers second leading cause of mortality in economically developed and developing countries. Importantly, it is the third leading cause of death in the UAE after cardiovascular diseases and accidents. Data from the UAE Ministry of Health indicate that cancer accounts for approximately 500 deaths per year. A recent study by the Health Authority- Abu Dhabi revealed that male UAE nationals were diagnosed with cancer at a rate of 75 in every 100,000 of the population. The report also indicates that 20% of cancer cases in prostate gland, making it the fourth most prevalent form of cancer among adult men in the UAE. This study will involve designing natural compounds (identification and isolation) and development of chemotherapeutic drugs from UAE medicinal plants and their specific effects on multiple molecular and cellular targets in the treatment of cancer. The proposed project, which is basically an extension of on-going research, will deal with next level of addressing Moringa peregrina root tubers that are used by the bedu of the UAE in their traditional medical systems. The proposed work will focus on investigating the potential of active compounds from M. peregrina root tubers and its efficacy in human cancer cell lines. The work plan involves collecting and cultivating the Moringa plants in UAE university farm. Further, to evaluate antioxidant and anticancer potential of active compounds form root tubers of M. peregrina in human cancer cells in vitro and in silico approach. The proposed work has potential for translational application. The expected outcomes of this study are the identification of natural products as chemotherapeutics of cancer, which will go a long way in the management of cancer and mitigating the sufferings of a large number of patients in UAE and the whole world.
