Abstract

This is the editorial of Spring 2011 issue of JoLA-Journal of Landscape Architecture. There is an increased urgency to understand landscapes, their workings, secrets, logics, opportunities and inherent dangers - and above all their speficity. This is underscored by the seeming proliferation of ready-made and generic design solutions for intervening in the territory. The only remaining plausible operative instrument for engaged resistance to the relentless "flattening out" of cultures and places is re-engagement with landscape.
