Critics are usually in agreement that one of the most significant moments for Eugenio Carmi’s body of work was the period as ‘art director’ of the iron and steel industries of the Italian State (1956-1965). Yet there is a tendency to privilege the prevalently artistic experiences of Carmi’s encounter with that corporate environment. This article aims rather at stressing the crucial role of Carmi as a designer in such context.
