Abstract An investigation has been carried out on the frequency of ~- thalassemia heterozygotes in third-form pupils of the Middle School in the Salento Peninsula. While this area represents one of the South ltalian areas with greatest ~-thalassemia incidence, the frequency of the disease is considerably higher than that reported in the literature data for this area. The AA emphasize the usefulness of constant awareness on the part of the social and health services, the schools and the population at large, in order to carry out efficacious preventive screening.
