Geological mapping at a 1:10,000 scale, remote sensing analyses and structural field work, have been carried out in an area located along the northeastern rim of the high Agri Valley, (from Marsiconuovo to Montemurro). Based on these data, stratigraphic and tectonic relationship of the different outcropping units has been valuated and a Quaternary fault system (here named Val d'Agri Fault System, or VAFS) recognised. The VAFS, which is superposed onto preexisting fold and thrust structures, consists of roughly N120 trending left-lateral strike-slip faults and associated features. As VAFS structures offset Lower and Middle Pleistocene continental deposits, the activity of this fault system must reach Middle Pleistocene or younger ages.

Abstract
Geological mapping at a 1:10,000 scale, remote sensing analyses and structural field work, have been carried out in an area located along the northeastern rim of the high Agri Valley, (from Marsiconuovo to Montemurro). Based on these data, stratigraphic and tectonic relationship of the different outcropping units has been valuated and a Quaternary fault system (here named Val d'Agri Fault System, or VAFS) recognised. The VAFS, which is superposed onto preexisting fold and thrust structures, consists of roughly N120 trending left-lateral strike-slip faults and associated features. As VAFS structures offset Lower and Middle Pleistocene continental deposits, the activity of this fault system must reach Middle Pleistocene or younger ages.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
