A first calculation of the anharmonic damping of surface phonons in Cu(111) has been carried out. The slab method is used to simulate the truncation of the crystal. A central potential is adopted to parametrize harmonic and anharmonic interactions. Clear indications of enhanced surface anharmonicity are provided. © 1991.
