The various types of investigation for evaluating the quality of surface waters are briefly examined, and the need for adopting integrated studies is emphasized. In addition to chemical tests, these should also include biological monitoring by means of benthic macroinvertebrate studies. While the former tests allow the type of concentration ofthe various pollu¬ting factors in the watercourse to be identified with great precision at any given moment, the biological tests mean that the effects produced in time by the various causes of pollution can be evaluated, and a complete picture be given of the various stresses to which the watercourse is subject.
