The authors have carried out biological mapping and detailed study of the chemical and bacteriological characteristics of the river Chienti, one of the main watercourses of centraI Italy. On the whole, there was good correlation between the chemical analysis findings and the quality categories deduced from the biological map. At Colfiorito (near one of the river sources) and between Tolentino and the river mouth, the situation was found to be criticaI. Compared with findings from a study carried out 15 years ago, the quality of water had worsened, in spite of the fact that purification plants for treating household and industrial waste have been installed since the earlier study.

Abstract

The authors have carried out biological mapping and detailed study of the chemical and bacteriological characteristics of the river Chienti, one of the main watercourses of centraI Italy. On the whole, there was good correlation between the chemical analysis findings and the quality categories deduced from the biological map. At Colfiorito (near one of the river sources) and between Tolentino and the river mouth, the situation was found to be criticaI. Compared with findings from a study carried out 15 years ago, the quality of water had worsened, in spite of the fact that purification plants for treating household and industrial waste have been installed since the earlier study.
