The contents of Cadmium and Lead in the foods of seventy different daily diets were measured in order to calculate the average daily intake of these elements by the population. Samples were taken from foods ready to be consumed in collective dining rooms and private dwellings in order to have a sufficiently complete picture of the eating habits of the population. The following daily intakes emerged: Cadmium: 52-138 ug with average daily intake equivalent to 90.4±23 ug; Lead: 96-221 ug with average daily intake equivalent to 145±30 ug. In consideration of the specific toxicity of Cadmium and Lead, the World Health Organization has reported as «Previsional Tolerable Weekly intake » the following values: 400-500 ug per week or 55-70 ug per day for Cadmium and 3000 ug per week or 430 ug daily for Lead. An alarming symptom of environmental pollution is constituted by the fact that the average values of Cadmium intake found in this study are consistently higher than those recommended by the W.H.O.
