A direct substitution of the phenylsulfonyl group is observed during the reaction of Grignard reagents with beta-sulfonyl-gamma-oxo-arenebutanenitriles in the presence of lithium perchloride. Primary, secondary and functionalizated organomagnesium reagents can be profitably used for this procedure.

Abstract
