The resistance of animals against infection agents, tumor cells and parasitic diseases is determined by the various factors of immune systems. Innate immunity consists of the protective cells and substances that are present for host defence without previous exposure of the host to an infective agent. The bibliographic review evidences that those factors of innate immunity could play an important role in equine defence against infectious agents; despite this, the information is very limited. This study is a further contribution to the determination of the physiological ranges of some horses serum innate immune parameters (lysozyme, alternative pathway of complement and bacterial serum activity) and to standardization of the routine diagnostic assays.
