Nitroaldol (Henry) reaction of a variety of nitroalkanes, under neat t-BuOK catalysis, allows a one-pot synthesis of polyfunctionalized tetrahydropyranols which, with CeCl3-7H(2)O/NaI system, dehydrate to dihydropyran derivatives. Thus, the dibydropyrans can be obtained in only two steps from nitroalkanes.
