Hospital infections represent an important element to determine the quality of medical care. As a matter of fact, they constitute a large factor of morbidity and mortality and they often are the cause of important complications resulting from hospitalization. In all cases, correct use of disinfectants and antiseptics is an effective way to avoid infections. During the first half-year 2006 the CIO (checking committee for hospital infections), into the limits of a wide program for hospital infections supervision and prevention, carried out successfully next points: revision and updating of the substances in use, according to the new scientific evidences and the special needs some Operative Units had into the ASUR 10 Marche hospitals; making uniform the interventions by choosing an evidence-based medical care; dejection of wastes caused by the wrong utilisation of the products; expenditure control; evaluation of the personnel vocational training and creation of courses to teach the right use of disinfectants and antiseptics; drafting an easy reference guide to the use of disinfectants and antiseptics; creation of a poster to explain essential information about the products, their use and the operating procedures. It will be delivered to all the ASUR 10 Marche hospital Departments and Services. The realisation of this project required the cooperation of many professional figures among whom the pharmacist played a leading role. This guide is different because it gives importance to the safety of the workers and their health when they use chemical products about chemical and biological risks.
