In the present paper two deep profiles which cut through northern Calabria have been elaborated on the basis of available geological and geophysical data. The model adopted for this area is charac- lerized bv four main structural elements which have been named as follows: 1) apulian foreland which is considered to be the african margin of the chain and is characterized by a thick carbo- natic sequence; 2) bradanic through which is cha- racterized by plio-pleistocene terrains composed of clay evolving upwards to coarse-grained sedi- ments: 3) apenninic chain which is made-up of different nappes belonging to different paleogeo- graphic domains which were differentiated during the late triassic period. At this time they were characterized by two carbonatic platforms and by the interposed Lagonegro basin. The chain has been built up during Burdigalian time; its actual vergence is toward the african foreland; 4) cala- brian alpine chain which is made up of different tectonic units composed of ophiolites and their sedimentary cover derived from the Tethys and of metamorphites derived from the african paleo- margin. The chain has been built up during Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene age. Its actual ver- gence is toward Europe. The geometrical relationships between these elements are illustrated in the profiles; if can also be seen that the upper crust of northern Calabria is formed mainly by Apenninic nappes which are covered by thin layers of alpine units. The whole structure is complicated by recent block faulting connected with the rifting of the lower Tyrrhenian which started about 12 MY ago. As concerns the deep crustal structures along the profiles it seems possible to recognize a differentiated crystalline basament below the foreland, a probable "migmatitic" zone below western Calabria and part of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the occurrence of soft mantle interposed between 8.0 km/sec velocity isolines.
