Sustainability of pastoral systems relies on the balance between animal performance and efficient use of natural resources. In this context, breed choice may be a key factor influencing the economic, environmental and social sustainability of farming, while ensuring animal welfare. However, information on breed-related differences in adaptability and resilience remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of breed choice to sustainable sheep farming by comparing two different sheep breeds under the same management conditions. The study was conducted in Central Italy during one grazing season (June–October 2023) on 40 adult ewes (20 Comisana and 20 Sopravissana, 10 lactating and 10 dry each) managed in an extensive system. Sample size was determined a priori through power analysis (α=0.05; power=0.9), indicating adequacy for both LMM and ANOVA models. The protocols agreed with Legislative Decree No. 146.

Abstract
