Through four case studies, the former asylums in the Marche, the survey examines the transitoriness of the relationship between psychiatric hospital and city in the last fifty years. It highlights: how the cities of mad acted as conditioning factors within the processes of urban and territorial transformation; the relationships between conservative hypothesis and urban dynamics; the difficult balance between architectural-monumental values and social, collective and individuals’ history.
