The Casa Cantoniera represents a recurring and recognisable presence in the Italian panorama, above all for the color of the facades imprinted in the memory of the past travelers. The purpose of this contribution is to set up a cultural profile of this red buildings, also in the light of the singular recovery and enhancement process, trying to bring out what the houses have represented for the communities. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the new enhancement strategies, identifying some good practices, already adopted in the interventions, according to a detailed survey and a “Pilot plan for the enhancement, re-functionalization and reuse of roadhouses”. The projects offer a wide range of possible reuses, adopting a sustainable strategy for the different regional landscapes.
Elemento ricorrente e riconoscibile nel paesaggio italiano, la casa cantoniera rappresenta una presenza costante, ma poco conosciuta. Il primo obiettivo del presente contributo è pertanto quello di provare a ricostruire una biografia culturale di questo particolare edificio, anche alla luce del processo di recupero e valorizzazione recentemente avviato, cercando di far emergere ciò che tali costruzioni hanno rappresentato, non solo per i lavoratori e le loro famiglie, ma anche per le comunità intere che hanno potuto sperimentare tale singolare presenza. Le case cantoniere sono da diversi decenni interessate da un processo di abbandono, legato alla ridefinizione delle mansioni assegnate agli operatori incaricati della sorveglianza e della manutenzione delle strade su tutto il territorio nazionale. A seguito dell’abbandono, le case hanno subito un processo di lento e inesorabile degrado, ma già da alcuni anni le amministrazioni competenti stanno tentando di recuperare i manufatti architettonici, inserendoli in un nuovo circuito di fruizione.
