Dear Colleagues, We want this Special Issue to be a collection of contributions and a source of knowledge concerning the application of nutraceutical compounds obtained from by-products and their potential use in the development of functional feed ingredients with evidence of their potential effects on farmed animals in terms of impact on the quality and safety of food of animal origin and on animal productive and reproductive performance. The reduction of food waste and the recovery of by-products and/or processing residues for reuse in the livestock supply chain has reached considerable importance globally and is now a necessity. For these reasons, companies in the food industry have been required to adopt more sustainable development models in terms of environmental, economic, and social impact (F2F Strategy). The re-use of agro-industrial by-products as animal feed is now considered to be a key step towards the exploitation of processing residues while minimizing environmental impact at different levels. The current situation shows that the disposal of by-products very often represents both an economic and an environmental cost for the companies that produce them. On the other hand, these by-products are frequently rich in bioactive substances that represent a resource that can be reused. These new natural ingredients could potentially play an important role in the promotion of animal welfare and in improving the quality and safety of food of animal origin. In this scenario, the use of these by-products as alternative functional and nutraceutical feeds is of considerable interest at the level of scientific research. For these reasons, in this Special Issue, reviews and original research papers regarding these topics are welcome. In particular, we encourage any contributions focusing on the evaluation of the effects of dietary supplementation with new functional ingredients that can have a positive impact on (i) improving the quality and safety of food of animal origin and improving animal production and reproductive performance or on (ii) increasing resistance to diseases, thereby reducing the use of drugs in the farm as indicated by EU directives, and the risk of antibiotic resistance.
