In August 2017, thirty students and researchers in the field of urban and spatial planning from different Italian universities participated in the itinerant workshop ViaSalaria, an experimental walk of more than 300 hundred kilometers from San Benedetto del Tronto (AP) to Rome, for over two weeks, to rediscover the ancient route of the Salaria road. From an eye-level perspective, they analyzed the impact of the 2016 earthquakes on the physical environment and on the social, economic and cultural fabric of the affected communities. Walking and backpacking for days as they did along untrodden paths hundreds of kilometers long require strong motivation and uncommon spirit. Indeed, the main intention and sentiment urging the group of young scholars to set off was the desire to contribute, however marginally, to the post-earthquake recovery process, bringing their skills into play on the very field.
