The results of a preliminary research aimed at studying the biodiversity of the bryophytes of the Presidential Estate of Castelporziano are presented. In this first phase, the research focused on two areas located respectively in the north and in the south part of the Estate in order to highlight the floristic, ecological and biogeographical differences of the bryophytes in relation to the climatic, pedological and vegetational differences existing between the two areas. Researches have led to the identification of 91 bryophyte taxa (22 liverworts and 69 mosses). Three liverworts and one moss are a new discovery for the Lazio Region; for other three mosses the records date back before 1968 and consequently their discovery represents the most recent report for over 50 years. Ellenberg indicator values for light, moisture, reaction (pH), nitrogen and salt tolerance were also applied for each species. The floristic, ecological and biogeographical data obtained so far have provided us a series of preliminary indications aimed at identifying the role played by the bryophytes in the functioning of the forest ecosystem of the Estate and consequently at establishing its degree of naturalness/anthropization.
