Chapter 4 analyses the valuation with patent indicators for the assessment of the General Purpose Technologies (GPTs), such as financial patenting and business methods. The number of financial patents has increased significantly in parallel with innovations in payment and financial systems, with many potential applications in several other industries. Scholars have argued that financial patents, like other business methods patents, have low value and are owned for strategic reasons rather than for protecting real inventions. To test this hypothesis the probability of patent indicators (grant, refusal, and opposition) of financial patents is analysed as a function of age and industry of origin of the patentee (financial vis-à-vis non financial sector), the relative size of the patent portfolio, and other patentee's characteristics.

Abstract
Chapter 4 analyses the valuation with patent indicators for the assessment of the General Purpose Technologies (GPTs), such as financial patenting and business methods. The number of financial patents has increased significantly in parallel with innovations in payment and financial systems, with many potential applications in several other industries. Scholars have argued that financial patents, like other business methods patents, have low value and are owned for strategic reasons rather than for protecting real inventions. To test this hypothesis the probability of patent indicators (grant, refusal, and opposition) of financial patents is analysed as a function of age and industry of origin of the patentee (financial vis-à-vis non financial sector), the relative size of the patent portfolio, and other patentee's characteristics.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
