This paper reports the results of acoustical measurements carried out in a small Italian opera house. The Vaccaj theatre, designed by architect Giuseppe Locatelli and opened on September 10, 1797, is a classic example of Italian opera house, with three stages, a gallery and a horseshoe hall for a total of 352 seats. The horseshoe shape allows to have a predominance of direct sound due to the small distance between the stage and the listeners but, for the high ceiling, often the sound produces few reflections with minimal delay time. Clarity of perception is an important quality of Italian theatres: a characteristic favourable to listening comes from the distance of the listeners from the stage and from the moderate reverberation time. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate several acoustic parameters in order to verify the acoustic characteristics of the theatre and to compare them with other theatres of the same type and size. The acoustic characterization measures, in accordance with the ISO 3382-1 standard, allowed the determination of the main acoustic parameters, which were analyzed both by evaluating the spatial distribution and by calculating the average values for the different areas intended for the public, in which a theatre can be divided (stalls, stage orders and gallery).
