Vulnerability Assessment and Preservation of Historic Landscape in a Changing Climate

Global warming, and consequently climate change, has emerged as one of the most significant threats in the preservation of historical landscapes and cultural heritage resources all over the world. The character of the historic landscape is strictly related to the climate and changing in the weather pattern has destructive and irreversible impacts on cultural heritage resources – both physically and socio-economically. Aim to reduce the adverse impacts of climate change; this paper develops a conceptual framework for vulnerability assessment in historic landscapes. To conduct this, a comprehensive understanding of the concept presents by reviewing the evolution of approaches for assessing vulnerability to climate change. Then, some European cases, which communities or institutions are attempting to manage cultural heritage threatened by climate change, are analysed to establish the proposed framework.
