Mycoplasmas are recognized as a cause of many and important infections in veterinary medicine, resulting in different clinical signs, poorly responsive to antimicrobial therapy. Their isolation should be considered in the differential diagnosis and, because an accurate identification is crucial in an effective therapeutic program, new techniques can be useful to overcome the long cultivation period required. Moreover, efficacious post-therapeutic outcomes need a timely diagnosis combined with an appropriate selection of antibacterial agents. The aims of this work were to: -develop a new diagnostic system for the rapid and semi-quantitative detection of Mycoplasma species in veterinary medicine, directly from clinical specimens; -validate the performances of the new system; -optimize the validity of the antibiotic susceptibility testing evaluating the Minimal Inhibition Concentration of a panel of nine antibiotics used in veterinary medicine.
