After brief notes on the conceptual construction of the terms 'peregrini' to indicate foreigners in Roman law and on Roman mobility, the essay focuses on the legal treatment and judicial management of foreigners immigrants in ancient Rome, from the Kingdom to the 'constitutio Antoniniana'. Special attention is given to the role and scope of 'commercium', 'conubium' and the so-called 'ius migrandi' in the republican age, analyzing relevant scholarship on current problems on these rights as well as the complexity of their individuation.
