Post-mortem findings in 5,9211ambs and 1,516 sheep from France, Poland, Hungary and Ita1y were recorded at an Italian commercial slaugbterhouse. The joumey time ranged from 25 to 85 hours for the imported animals and was shorter than 8 hours for the Italian animals. A much higher prevalence of infectious pneumonia was detected in imported lambs than in Italian lambs and a correlation was found with a joumey time under 8 hours or over 24 hours. No linear correlation was observed between this disease and joumey time when the latter was longer than 24 hours. In sheep no correlation was found between infectious respiratory diseases and length or duration of joumey. A great variability in the prevalence of infectious pneumonia/bronchopneumonia was observed among lambs and sheep belonging to consignments with similar characteristics.
