Using firm-level data provided by the Italian Istat-Cnr innovation survey this chapter explores the relevance, nature and impact of innovation activities across the main manufacturing industries in the 1990-92 period. More in particular new light is shed on: a) how many firms do innovate in each industry and what factors determine the probability that a firm introduce a product or a process innovation; b)What is the nature of innovation activities undertaken and what is the amount of financial resources devoted to innovation; c) what is the firms’ economic output affected by innovation.
