The book outlines the phenomenon “Chinese garden”, from Classical to modern times, in their essential compositional principles from the perspective of contemporary landscape architecture. After a typological description, an overview of the historical evolution of the garden design in China, an analysis of the spatial framework of the Chinese garden as well as their compositional methods and a study of the physical elements employed, the book offers a reading of the relation between the classical Chinese garden and contemporary landscape architecture in China. It discusses the different ways in which traditional compositional principles has informed contemporary garden design and open space making in China.
