Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography is a critical essay and an operative handbook that paved the way to modern graphic design. It is a game-changing book that still attracts the interest and curiosity of design historians and practitioners after almost a century since its publication. Yet, victim of its own historiographical canonization, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned. The bibliographical and visual sources are amongst the understudied aspects of The New Typography that await close scrutiny. Focusing both on the content and the form of the book, this research project aims to identify, analyze, contextualize and reenact the sources of The New Typography in view of an online database, a publication, an international conference and a travelling exhibition. Research outputs target a heterogeneous audience and further an understanding of the larger cultural context, lineage and impact of Tschichold’s book and the typographic movement that stemmed from it.
