The essay discusses three different kinds of modern interventions in European historical gardens. The first category considers projects showing an integration between contemporary design solutions and historical conceptual principles as a means of understanding and interpreting the historical dimension and cultural specificity of longtime disappeared garden compositions. The second group presents the creation of completely new gardens in historical context as symbolic reinvention of the past of the site. The third grouping proposes temporary art installations in historic parks as a means of awakening understanding of the site by showing the paradox of the simultaneity of past and present.

Abstract

The essay discusses three different kinds of modern interventions in European historical gardens. The first category considers projects showing an integration between contemporary design solutions and historical conceptual principles as a means of understanding and interpreting the historical dimension and cultural specificity of longtime disappeared garden compositions. The second group presents the creation of completely new gardens in historical context as symbolic reinvention of the past of the site. The third grouping proposes temporary art installations in historic parks as a means of awakening understanding of the site by showing the paradox of the simultaneity of past and present.
