Abstract

The paper is focused on the road surfaces in the ancient towns and proposes some reflections on the values that characterize this heritage, with attention to the conservation issues. It should, in fact, carefully rethink the old building systems, groped to use new instruments, mostly of a technical nature, in the implementation of actions for the maintenance, in the first instance, and for the restoration. The range of possible design solutions is extremely various in terms of size, invasiveness and complexity, as well as materials, techniques and embodiments, in a cultural reality that involved questions of tradition and innovation. In the image of the city, the road surfaces play an important role that encompasses a strong contextual value and identity and that is manifested by the geographical location of the city itself, and by the climatic factors in the geological, topography and morphology configuration, factors that are related to the urban history. In some cases, it’s possible to establish a partnership between the city and the pavements, and it is equally obvious that this report evolves in the time. The materiality of the contemporary city isn’t, certainly, the same as the old city or the city of the nineteenth century; it appears different, transformed by the uses and the needs of the population, with the evolution of the techniques and cultures. In the past, there were different types of pavements, that taking into account the importance of the streets or the squares, within an urban hierarchy. The natural resources were used to produce the materials of these spaces, to create an environment of harmony and livability. It’s, therefore, important analyze the elements that define the local identity, recognizing them in an analytical and integrated way. The knowledge of these values are referred to three distinct areas: the built environment, the connective elements (streets and squares) and the green spaces. These areas help to define the urban form that contains public and private spaces. The roads are developed in length and are generally dedicated to the transit of persons or vehicles, while the squares have various forms, and they function as a place of aggregation. Both the squares that the streets are characterized by paving of stone, which represent the support of the cultural identity for the community. From the second half of twentieth century, the attention to these aspects, developed as a prerequisite to the operations of conservation and enhancement. The problems of the conservation need to be addressed with method, taking into account the various disciplines involved. The intention of the paper is to indicate how to preserve, with solutions which are oriented to the preservation as a tool for enhancement of the historic center.
