A 98% mortality rate was detected in a group of 98 Carduelis atrata imported forma South America. The symptoms were similiar to what is know as "going light": rapid weight loss, pectoral muscle atrophy, swollen abdomen, diarrhea, and letargy. Gross lesion were: spleno-hepatomegaly, pulmonary congestion, dilatation and swelling of intestine wall. Histological observation showed changes in the enterocytes, induced by the terminal maturing stages of the isospora sp. macrogametocytes. Plurivisceral interstitial infiltration of mononuclear cells, with large numbers of monocytes and lymphocytes was also present. Parassites were occasionally found in tissues mononuclear cells. Microbiological tests revealed no evidence of pathogens.
