Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE) disease, designated also as Viral Leucoencephalomyelitis of Goats (VLG), was studied in Italy from 2 goats and 2 kids. "• The viral particles were detected in explant cultures of synovial membrane cells; virus-identification was made by immunodiffusion, immunofluorescence and cytopathology on concentrated culture fluid. The histological and pathological features' in kids were principally characterized by primary demyelination of the central nervous system accompanied by intertitial flogosis and lymphoid pseudofollicular hyperplasia in lungs. The main histopathological changes found in goats were synovial cell hyperplasia and infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages accompanied by fibrosis, necrosis, mineralization and periarticular collagenous hypertrophy of carpal joints. Large interstitial flogosis in lungs, lymphoid hyperplasia in udder, amyloid deposition in the spleen, hepatic sinusoids and renal glomeruli' were the most consistent lesions observed in goats.
